FUT (Strip) Hair Transplant

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also called the strip method, removes a thin strip of scalp from the donor area and dissects it into grafts. It can yield a high number of grafts in one session and is often more affordable per graft — at the cost of a fine linear scar.

Overview

What is FUT Hair Transplant?

In FUT, a surgeon removes a narrow strip of skin from the back of the head, then a team separates it under magnification into individual follicular-unit grafts for implanting. The donor area is closed with sutures, leaving a single fine linear scar that's hidden by surrounding hair.

FUT can produce a large number of grafts efficiently, which suits bigger areas of loss. The trade-off is the linear scar (so very short haircuts may reveal it) and a slightly longer donor-area recovery than FUE.

Who it's for

People needing a high graft count in one session
Those who keep their hair longer (scar stays hidden)

FAQs

FUT Hair Transplant — common questions

What's the difference between FUT and FUE?
FUT removes a strip and leaves a fine linear scar but can yield many grafts efficiently; FUE removes follicles individually with only tiny dot scars and suits shorter hairstyles. A clinic will advise which fits your donor area and goals.
Will the FUT scar be visible?
It's a single fine line hidden by hair of normal length. It becomes visible only with very short cuts (grade 1–2). Skilled closure techniques keep it as discreet as possible.
Is FUT cheaper than FUE?
Per graft, FUT is often more economical, especially for larger sessions, because it's less labour-intensive to harvest. Always compare per-graft pricing in writing.
How long is FUT recovery?
Sutures are typically removed after 10–14 days. Most people return to work within a few days, avoiding strenuous activity for two weeks.
